Scheduling

We frequently receive requests from parents and students to make a schedule change.  It is our hope that the following will help to clarify Centerville's policy regarding schedule changes.

Requests for Honors Classes:

The following lists the criteria we considered for placement in an honors course. If your student is GATE identified, they will be automatically placed in the appropriate honors course(s).  If they are not GATE identified, there is a process established by the district that we follow to make it fair for all interested parties.  The district policy is that they need to have scored "ADVANCED" on the California Standards Test (CST) and an A or B in the subject area.  Honors courses are designed to be rigorous and challenging.  If your student does not qualify this year, through hard work and high achievement, they may be identified for honors next year.

Request for Removal from Honors Classes:

Transitioning from elementary into junior high school can be difficult for any student, even those who did well in elementary.  This can be especially true of honors classes where the higher expectations and rigor can seriously challenge a student unused to it.  We regularly receive requests during the first semester to transfer students out of honors into a regular class based on low grades.  It is our policy at Centerville to try to work with a struggling honors student throughout the first semester to teach them study and organizational skills that they may be lacking to see if they can raise their grade and remain in honors.  Typically, if they are still receiving a grade lower than a "C", we recommend a parent conference with their teacher to consider transferring them out of honors into a regular course at the semester change.

Requests for Elective Changes:

Unfortunately it is not possible for everyone to get their top choice(s) for electives.  In general, incoming 8th graders were given first priority.  Also, if you turned in your registration form late or have only recently enrolled at Centerville, we processed your requests last.  All of the above may help to explain why you did not receive your first choice for an elective.  However, it is possible that for the second semester you received an elective you would prefer.  We will consider all official requests for elective changes within the first 2 weeks of a new semester.  Changes will only be made if there is room available to move into another elective without changing any of the student's core classes (i.e. history, English, science, and math) and without impacting P.E. classes.  If you would like to request an elective change, please direct your student to come into the front office and fill out a blue schedule change form.

Specific Teacher Requests:

It is Centerville's policy to hire the best and most qualified teachers we can find.  Every teacher at Centerville is highly qualified based on both state and federal standards.  We understand that not every student and/or parent will be initially comfortable with a particular teacher's teaching style and/or personality.  However, we believe that every student can learn to be successful in any class given the right attitude and support.  Therefore, it is the policy here at Centerville to not make schedule changes based on teacher preference.  If you have a concern about a particular teacher, please contact that teacher first to try to resolve it with them personally.  If, after you have contacted the teacher and made an attempt at resolution with no success, please feel free to contact your student's counselor to discuss your concern.  Although counselors do not have any direct authority over teachers, they can help to facilitate communication between the student, parent, and teacher in order to resolve your concerns.  In addition, counselors are available to assist your student to reach their academic potential in any class and can give them suggestions on how to succeed with a teacher that is difficult for them.
