ARCHERY**(Beginning)

Directed by an experienced coach and two assistant archers, this session focuses on safety, form and the basics of shooting. Students are taught how to wear safety gear and practice range rules while handling a compound bow, loading arrows, and using techniques to be able to aim and shoot. There are games and competitions with basic targets.

** Due to the popularity of this sport, enrollment is limited to one Archery class per academic year.

FALL only

ARCHERY** (Advanced)

This course is open only to last year’s CJHS beginning archers. Practice in basic safety and form continues with emphasis on shooting accuracy. Supervised training includes further use of the compound bow plus instruction on shooting with a recurve bow. There are games and competitions with a variety of challenging targets.

** Due to the popularity of this sport, enrollment is limited to one Archery class per academic year.

(Archers with outside experience must have approval of Program Director)

WINTER only

BADMINTON

This activity aims to provide students with the knowledge, understanding and experience to play the sport. Beginners will be taught fundamental rules and etiquette with emphasis on essential preliminary skills and elementary strokes.
Advanced players will be encouraged to apply more advanced techniques in recreational games and tournament format competitions.

WINTER only

BASKETBALL (Girls; 7th grade Boys; 8th grade Boys)

Participants practice the fundamentals with emphasis on rules and proper skill development. Instruction, drills and games are directed by the school’s former Head Basketball coach, Mr. Jason Davis. This is excellent preparation for school tryouts as well as recreational competition.

BOWLING

In this co-ed activity students will learn the fundamentals of bowling skills, stragies and scoring on the lanes of our local bowling center. No previous experience is necessary. Instructions and supervision will be provided by one of our school's teachers. The bowling center will provide proper shoes and equipment.

Prerequisite: Must have transportation to Cloverleaf Family Bowl, 40645 Fremont Blvd. Being on time is extremely important!

CHESS CLUB

Under adult supervision at lunchtime, play casual chess games with friends. Fundamental rules and essential strategies are promoted through competitions, mini tournaments and Speed Chess.

FALL and WINTER

DODGEBALL

This is a lunchtime, co-ed, recreational activity under a coach’s supervision. It features competitions and a variety of organized games using a sponge ball with new teams selected each week. This elimination sport involves jumping, running and throwing to promote activity and fitness.

FALL and WINTER

FENCING (Beginning and Advanced)

This class provides an introduction to the modern sport of fencing. Beginners learn proper etiquette, footwork, positions and scoring all with use of the foil.

Following the novice level, advanced fencers expand their foil techniques while being introduced to a new discipline—the epee. Students will learn new strategies and practice with drills designed for this intermediate level.

Two coaches provide the instruction. Each session concludes with competitions.

Prerequisites: Athletic shoes and lightweight clothing are a must! No previous knowledge for Beginners. Advanced students must have completed Beginning Fencing at CJHS.

FALL and WINTER

GOLF (Beginning and Advanced)

Using our equipment at the Fremont Park Golf Course, participants receive instruction/review of golf skills and basic swing fundamentals, scoring, knowledge of the rules, etiquette and strategies of play. Students will use the driving range, putting and chipping greens for practice. Two coaches provide instruction for beginning and advanced ability.

Prerequisite: Students will be placed according to ability. Must have transportation to Fremont Park Golf Course, 39751 Stevenson Place, Fremont. Being on time is extremely important!

FALL and WINTER

INDOOR SOCCER

This class features a fast, high scoring version of soccer with the ball continuously in play. Under a coach’s supervision, there are organized recreational competitions in the gym with new teams selected each week. Open to boys and girls of both grade levels, this class is designed to strengthen basic soccer skills while promoting physical fitness.

Prerequisite: Basic soccer skills

FALL and WINTER

LACROSSE

This co-ed class is designed as an introduction to America's oldest team sport. Using school furnished equipment, students will learn basic skills—scooping, cradling, passing, catching and shooting from our local high school Lacrosse coach. Emphasis will be on fundamental techniques in drills and small games. Everyone will be encouraged to participate to the best of their ability in this fun, fast-paced sport.

Prerequisite: Athletic shoes and P.E. clothing are mandatory!

FALL only

PING PONG / TABLE TENNIS

Using school equipment in the gym at lunchtime, a coach will encourage proper technique, footwork, rules and game strategy for this sport. This recreational activity begins each week with a warm up with ball machines before students divide into teams to play singles and doubles games and matches in tournament format.

Two Sessions: 7 weeks each; offered Monday OR Friday (students can select only one of the two days)
FALL and WINTER

SOFTBALL

This is a lunchtime, co-ed, recreational activity under a coach's supervision. Using our equipment, students will form different teams each week to play a slow pitch softball game on our school field. Open to boys and girls of both grade levels.

Prerequisite: Basic softball skills; each player must provide their own glove

SPRING only

TEAM HANDBALL

Boys and girls of both grade levels will learn how to play one of the fastest team sports in the world from instructors of the Cal Heat adult team (4 time U.S. national champions). This Olympic sport, similar to soccer, requires shooting towards a goalie in front of a net. However, players must use their hands rather than their feet to defend, attack and score. Using the goals at each end of our gym’s regulation size court, students will experience all the techniques of the sport—high speed dribbling, throwing, jumping and shooting.

FALL and WINTER

TENNIS (Beginning)

In this introductory course, players will be taught the fundamentals of tennis including proper grip, basic strokes (forehand, backhand, volley and serve), footwork, rules, scoring, strategies and the proper etiquette of this racquet sport. All of the equipment is provided for practicing the basics in drills and games.

FALL and WINTER

TENNIS (Advanced)

Open only to students who were enrolled in one of last year’s CJHS tennis classes, this course is designed to improve strokes, footwork and net play. Advanced techniques and tactics are introduced to help with the development of a higher-level game in Singles. Doubles strategy and competition will be included. In order to promote tennis as a life-time leisure activity, students will be encouraged to practice what they learn and play on their own when possible.

Prerequisite: Beginning or Advanced Tennis at Centerville Junior High. Athletic shoes and P.E. clothing are mandatory!

TRACK AND FIELD

Directed by one of our PE staff members, Coach Theresa Velasquez has had extensive experience as a runner at CSU Sacramento and as a head high school coach in this sport for our school district. She will acquaint students with the fundamentals of several track and field events. Emphasis will be on skill development in sprinting, hurdling, relay exchange, block starts, long jump, high jump, triple jump and throwing events.

WEIGHT TRAINING

This course introduces the fundamental skills of weight training for personal fitness. Emphasis will be placed on muscular strength, endurance, flexibility and safety. Important components of this activity include proper techniques for safe use of the weight room equipment, warm-up/cool down procedures, nutrition and the overall benefit of weight training.
